Jay W. Dial, born May 11, 1938 to Frank and Eleanor (Wood) Lambert in San Diego, Calif., passed away at his home in Young, Ariz. early Thursday morning, July 17, 2014.
In 1946, Eleanor was remarried to Dr. W. Dial, who adopted and raised three of her four children; as the oldest, Bob, was already grown and in the military. Jay and Doc had a very special bond and this was the man Jay would always and only consider his dad.
Jay served in the USMC from 1955 to 1960 and it was while stationed at Camp Pendleton, that he met and married the love of his life, Betty, in 1959. Together they had six children, Tom, Cindy, Melody, Shirley, Robin and Jay, Jr. They also were special parents to Thelma, Hanna and Shanna.
For the past 22 years, Jay worked for the USFS as a lookout on the fire towers in the Pleasant Valley Ranger District. Jay only just retired from the Forest Service at the end of the 2013 fire season.
Previous to that, Jay and his wife, Betty, worked as team truck drivers for many years. He also was a carpet layer, ranch hand and worked in road construction among other things. Over those years he met and worked with a lot of great people and many counted him as their friend.
Jay was preceded in death by his dad, Doc; his mom, Eleanor; his wife, Betty; his daughter, Cindy; his older brother, Bob; his younger sister, Kathy; and his nephew, Frank.
He is survived by his younger brother, Lou and his family; and his remaining children and their families.
A memorial to celebrate the life and legacy of Jay will be held at 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014 at the Forest Service compound in Young, Ariz. All who knew and loved Jay are encouraged to attend and share their memories with the family.
