Emmett Henry Thorman, 75, of Payson, passed away Aug. 29, 2013 at Hospice Compassus of Payson after a long illness. Born April 23, 1938 in Osceola County, Iowa, he grew up on his parents’ farm near Grandville, Iowa, then in Sheldon, Iowa, where he graduated from Sheldon High School in 1956. Emmett was active in FFA and helping his father on the farm in Sheldon. After graduation he worked and had his own truck, hauling grain, stock, etc. In 1972 he moved his family to Phoenix. Emmett worked for Shamrock for 23 years driving milk tankers from the dairies.
In 1990, Emmett married Judith (Judy) Bauer of Payson, then made Payson their permanent home in 1994 when he worked for Foxworth Galbraith until health problems developed. Judy retired in 2003 and they had hoped to travel in their motor home. After only one 8-1/2-weeks-long trip and several short in-state trips, their plans stopped and they took up gardening and fishing. Judy was able to keep Emmett and care for him at home with the wonderful people of hospice since March.
His parents, Leonard M. and Margaret Sweeny Thorman, and two infant brothers preceded Emmett in death. Emmett is survived by his wife, Judy, of 23 years of Payson; son, Dale Thorman (Debbie), Peoria, Ariz.; daughter, Barbara Gengler (Rod), Fremont, Neb.; son, David Thorman (Jill), Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; stepsons, Mike Bauer (Cindy), Payson, and Bill Bauer (Deanna), Deer Creek, Ariz.; four step grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; sister Florence (Lorne), Remsen, Iowa.
A memorial service is set for 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 28 at Rumsey Park Ramada 4; a celebration of life and luncheon follows. All family and friends welcome.
Make memorial contributions to Hospice Compassus of Payson.
The family of Emmett Thorman would like to thank Hospice Compassus of Payson for all the help and support through this trying time, including Heidi, Gena, Pam, Chaplain Charles Wilcox and the Hospice staff.
I (Judy) could not have done it without you. Thank you so much!
